Why a petition?

Why is this necessary? There has been some consternation over the behaviour of FDL regarding its treatment (or lack thereof) of the Elite and FEU (Frontier Elite Universe) community regarding the future of Elite 4, the long-awaited and much-speculated fourth chapter of the Elite series of games.

It's understandable, if a little disappointing, that Frontier Developments has effectively forgotten about Elite 4 (or the possibility of releasing the code for Frontier or First Encounters), in favour of other things which are more profitable for their business.

Regularly, fans new and old join the EBBS or other forums and ask about the rumours surrounding Elite 4, and constantly they have to be told "sorry, no information". As a consequence, the FEU fanbase is shrinking, slowly, but surely, down to just a hardcore of fans like those supporting this petition.

However, it appears that FDL have not only abandoned (or yet again put on hold) Elite 4, they have not given any more information or support to the fan community which, after almost nine years since the last Elite game was released, are still faithfully waiting and hoping for another Elite game.

Every press release or statement from FDL usually makes reference to their earlier works, and their most famous one (Elite). However what we, the loyal and patient fans of the series, are simply wanting is some sort of definitive statement from Frontier Developments regarding the future and fate of Elite 4.

In the words of one fan of the games, "been waiting in vain for elite 4 for a long time, hope Frontier Developments actually says something on it! If they say no, then we can all move on. If they say yes, then we can all be happy. The crappy thing is, they're not saying anything!!!"

A list of websites and individuals who support this petition is presented at the bottom of this document.

Who are FDL?

History FDL are a games company, established as Frontier Developments Ltd in January 1994, and are responsible for many games such as Zarch (or Virus), V2000, DarXide, RTC, A Dog's Life, and Wallace and Gromit. You can see their website at http://www.frontier.co.uk/.
Releasing Elite In 1982 David Braben, managing director of FDL, co-wrote the original classic Elite. This was followed in 1993 by FDL's sequel, Frontier: Elite 2 and then in 1994 the second sequel Frontier: First Encounters was released. Riding the publicity and demand generated by these titles, Frontier have consistently promised an Elite 4 (it's on their site with a ? box) but haven't yet delivered.
